Why does the general populous ignore public key cryptography?

I will never understand why the general public does not show more interest in protecting the data that they send over the Internet. You would think that they would want to take a more proactive stance in regard to things like public key cryptography.

In my mind there really is no reason why people should not be actively encrypting and signing the email correspondences that they send to each other. It is extremely easy to do and the benefits are obviously numerous.

Even if they did not encrypt, It would be great if Banks and the various online companies instituted a system in which they started signing their emails to help verify the integrity and authenticity of the messages contents. My hosting provider signs their emails (after I enabled the option in my control panel) and it is great.
